Germline Stem Cell Longevity

Like hibernation, Killifish diapause, C. elegans dauer and other stress-resistant states, Drosophila enter a dormancy program called adult reproductive diapause, when raised at low temperature and short day length, simulating fall. Such states can allow animals to live twice as long as they would in optimal growth conditions and emerge from the suspended state fertile. Understanding how animals accomplish such astonishing feats is of great general interest. We are studying diapause to elucidate mechanisms of fertility preservation and lifespan extension.
